The current healthcare system in all its complexity is examined in this book from both a professional and a personal view. This prominent physician is sounding the alarm that healthcare, specifically the personal physician relationship, is under attack and disappearing in many instances. Medicine has been steadily moving to a situation where non physician entities are often determining decisions based on reimbursement rather than medically prudent care. The undermining of the traditional patient/ physician relationship should be a concern to all and I highly recommend this excellent, very readable and candid book. Jill KulbeProduct details

From Both Ends of the Scalpel MD Robert A Schultz 9781681645094 Books Reviews
Broadly construed, there exists a certain degree of opacity in the health care field, and not necessarily as a result of an intent to make it difficult for the average patient to remain informed. More narrowly, health insurance and the complex web of incentives created by the existence thereof represent an incredible level of complexity, which has only been escalated by the interference of various entities, both public and private.
This book excels at unpacking this system of competing aims and animating an otherwise dry topic. Dr. Schultz compiles a compelling narrative, fraught with personal experience, that delineates a complicated system. Every reader should be alarmed by the unabashed and sobering portrait of the future of the American doctor, particularly considering the diminishing feasibility of their career path as a result of dizzying increases in the cost of their education, accompanied by steep drops in their future earnings and exacerbated by the deleterious of constrictive legislation, in itself obviated by the fundamental nature of the vocation.
Start to finish, an enthralling and vivid depiction of the medical industry as it stands today, illuminated through vignettes and personal experience, and steeped in the debates of today.
Robert Schultz's book "From Both Sides of the Scalpel" was interesting, educational and frightening! Being both a successful orthopedic surgeon, and a patient in need of critical care for many weeks, Dr Schultz is an authority regarding our broken health care system. His book eloquently points us towards an understanding of the dangerous direction health care is headed. The art and profession of medicine has been taken out of the hands of the highly educated doctor who must now operate under the control and restraints of managed health care. Funding my own health care for over 30 years I have witnessed the rising cost and deterioration of care, as we all have. Dr Schultz speaks from the heart when he elaborates on the importance of the doctor/patient relationship, and how that relationship is in jeopardy. This book is a must read for all Americans who at this time are part of our broken system of health care, and who need to be a voice in its reconstruction.
Just finished this book. Found it informative and thought provoking. The author mixes in anecdotes to make it entertaining. This book should be read by everyone who has health imsurance. John McCrohan of Clifton, NJ
I haven't finished it yet, but it appears he is (Dr.Schultz) is doing a great job showing what a farce the Obama Care is.
A compassionate, troubling examination of an increasingly disspirited profession from the unique perspective of a veteran healer who was himself brought back from the (technically) dead. Schultz documents example after example of bureaucratic strangulation harming the health of patients and the medical profession as a whole. If you ever needed incentive to eat that apple a day, this is it.
A Physician’s primary responsibility is toward his or her patient and to assure the sanctity of this relationship, payment for service should be decided between physician and patient, and that, as in all transactions in a free society, this payment be mutually agreeable. Only such a financial arrangement will guarantee the highest level of commitment and service of the physician to the patient.
These imposed financial arrangements between physicians and the third parties, however, have become so destructive to the patient-physician relationship, and to the medical profession as a whole, causing a deepening degradation of an already broken healthcare system.
Dr. Schultz’s well-written book exposes the truths of an egregious system that endangers the future of medicine in this country, potentially rendering our finest minds to that of civil servants. This is an important read for both medical professionals and every American concerned with the state of healthcare in our nation.
This is a must read book for anyone who has an interest in the current state of affairs of our modern healthcare system. Dr Schultz provides an excellent, engaging and remarkably coherent overview of the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare in our country seen thru the eyes of both a highly educated and enlightened physician as well as a cardiothoracic patient whose life lay in the balance during his own trying surgical ordeal. Dr Schultz has distinguished himself as an excellent writer and a passionate advocate for contemporary yet compassionate healthcare. Most highly recommended!
